The Sheriff of Cherokee County, Jason Chennault, is the chief law enforcement officer of Cherokee County, Oklahoma. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is responsible for providing law enforcement services for an area of approximately 776 square miles and a population of approximately 49,000 people. CCSO employs around fifty employees and several canine (K9) deputies. Of these fifty plus CCSO employees, all but nine are commissioned law enforcement officers.

The Sheriff of Cherokee County is responsible, by Oklahoma law, for patrol services in the unincorporated areas of Cherokee County, investigation of crime, court and courthouse security, prisoner transports, and District Court civil process service.

The Sheriff of Cherokee County is unique from most other Sheriffs in the State of Oklahoma as he does not operate a county jail. The Cherokee County Detention Center is a trust authority jail and is its own department within Cherokee County government. The Sheriff is a member of the board that oversees the jail, but he does not have any supervisory duties for the day-to-day operation of CCDC.
